USPA NEWS - The acting President of the Spanish Government, Mariano Rajoy, inaugurated the EFE Agency Museum in Madrid and then attended the 2nd EFE Culture Awards presentation ceremony. In his speech, he stressed that EFE is "a journalism company that is fully dedicated to serving the public interest."
Rajoy began his speech by recalling that the EFE Agency is "the most important news agency in the Spanish language and the fourth-largest in the world." Its figures, he said, are "truly impressive" because it operates in almost 200 cities in almost 120 countries on all five continents, with 41 offices and 250 international correspondents. "These numbers speak for themselves regarding the repercussion and impact of the EFE Agency," he added.
Although it was founded 77 years ago, the roots of the EFE Agency date back to the mid-19th Century. Hence, it has been recounting history to us "since almost the time of Larra right up until today," said the President of the Government. He explained that the EFE Agency is "a journalism company that is fully dedicated to serving the public interest, pluralism in society, informative rigor and the diversity of languages in Spain".
Mariano Rajoy added that "EFE remains focused on making history" as it continues to do the same job as it always has "obtain and distribute international information in Spain and around the world," especially in "Latin-America and those areas where people use Spanish, developing its activity in all formats and topics." The acting President of the Spanish Government also stressed that the EFE Agency has maintained a leading position thanks to its successful combination of "consistent quality" and a "commitment to cutting-edge technologies." And he added that "with those tools, its news articles are distributed far and wide in both Spain and Hispano-America."
In this regard, Mariano Rajoy said that EFE has been "the news agency that best informs Hispano-American countries at an international level by offering its own outlook on events." replacing the Anglophone perspective to a great extent. Rajoy said that the new EFE Agency Museum is "a new space for culture and knowledge, a fine example of the public-private collaboration that governs the day-to-day activity undertaken by the agency."
He also said that, as from today and thanks to this new museum, "we will all be able to observe the value of journalism in its ultimate expression" because "EFE has been and is the documentalist of Spanish history and reporter of the events - both major and minor - that we are most interested in." The acting President of the Spanish Government believes that the EFE Agency "has been and continues to be one of the supporting pillars of Spanish culture around the world," because EFE "is not only culture" but also "speaks to us of the global nature of Spanish culture."
