USPA NEWS - In late August, GCHQ achieved 'Disability Confident Leader' status, the highest level possible in the Disability Confident campaign, led by the Department for Work and Pensions.
Disability Confident encourages employers to be positive about the skills that people with disabilities can bring to the workforce, and to remove barriers to recruiting and retaining employees with disabilities. To be a Leader means doing the right thing, setting the right example, and sharing best practice.
A spokesperson for GCHQ said: "We are delighted to be awarded 'Disability Confident Leader' status. It recognises how seriously we take our responsibilities to our disabled colleagues. It also recognises and celebrates the work of those in the disabled community in GCHQ.
"They make a vital contribution to our mission. They also ensure that the current and next generation of disabled colleagues have a working environment that allows them to reach their full potential.
"This recognition is something we are very proud of."
Throughout its history, GCHQ has always looked to recruit the most talented people, irrespective of their background, and as threats diversify so must the workforce that faces them. Disability Confident is another significant step towards that aim.
More and more businesses are signing up to Disability Confident every week. The scheme helps them think differently about disability, and improve how they attract, recruit and retain disabled workers.

Disability Confident organisations play a leading role in changing attitudes for the better. They´re changing behaviour and cultures in their own businesses, networks and communities.

The scheme helps employers:

draw from the widest possible pool of talent
secure high quality staff who are skilled, loyal and hard working
improve employee morale and commitment by demonstrating that you treat all employees fairly
It also helps customers and other businesses identify those employers who are committed to equality in the workplace.
