It is the first museum of its kind in the Arab world: a universal museum focusing on shared human stories across civilizations and cultures. Louvre Abu Dhabi announced today that it will open its doors to the public on 11 November 2017. It is the first museum of its kind in the Arab world: a universal museum focusing on shared human stories across civilizations and cultures.
Located in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, Pritzker Prize-winning French architect Jean Nouvel has designed a museum city (Arab medina) under a vast silvery dome comprised of almost 8,000 unique metal stars.
On display will be the museum´s important collection of artworks, artifacts and loans from France´s top museums, ranging from prehistorical objects to commissioned contemporary artworks. Marking a departure from traditional museography that often separates according to origin, the collection will highlight universal themes from the entire history of human existence. This opening is the culmination of the most important museum cooperation project initiated by France. Following an intergovernmental agreement signed in March 2007, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, designed by the architect Jean Nouvel, is the first universal museum in the Arab world. Ten years after this signature, we salute the remarkable work of the France Muséums agency, the Abu Dhabi tourism and culture authority, the Louvre Abu Dhabi teams and the French embassy in the United Arab Emirates . It is thanks to their determination that this project, supported by the strategic dialogue between the French and UAE political authorities, will be able to see the light of day. At its opening, the Louvre Abu Dhabi will have a rich permanent collection from its own acquisitions of more than 600 works, ranging from Antiquity to the present, supplemented by the loan of 300 works of French museums. By putting together major works of all ages and all geographical areas, the museum path is built around the dialogue of cultures to highlight what is common to them. The Agence France Muséums, which brings together the Musée du Louvre and 12 other French museums, presided over the design of the project and will be responsible for 15 years of organizing 4 temporary exhibitions a year. Entitled "From one Louvre to the other: opening a museum for all", the first of these will be devoted to the history of the Parisian museum. In total, a thousand works from the French national collections will be presented in the first year.
After the creation of the Paris-Sorbonne Abu Dhabi University in 2006 and the Abu Dhabi Conference of December 2016 on Cultural Heritage in Conflict Situations, which had led to the creation of an international support fund, inauguration of the Louvre Abu Dhabi is a major event that marks our joint determination to promote the dialogue of cultures as a bulwark to all forms of obscurantism and extremism. This project enabled the establishment of a direct dialogue between French and UAE cultural actors and professionals, as well as the valorization of French expertise in cultural matters.-------------------------------
The inauguration of November 11th will end an exceptional French-Emirian cultural season which, since March 2016, will have enabled the bilateral cultural and artistic cooperation around the Louvre Abu Dhabi project. After a series of events in all the disciplines (music, theater, equestrian show, contemporary art), a Group F pyrotechnic show will highlight the museum on the occasion of its inauguration. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The project was initiated by the French President Hollande who had received Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture of the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, President of Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority at the Louvre, Paris. And a few months later Presdient Holland went to Abu Dhabi on the occasion of the United Arab Emirates national holiday for a visit to the first site of the Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi designed by the atchtecte French Jean Nouvel.
